Sri Lanka Sumithrayo is a government approved charity founded in 1974, by late Mrs. Joan De Mel and was incorporated by Act of Parliament No.10 of 1986. Srilanka Sumithrayo are registered members of Befrienders Worldwide and function as a non-political, non-religious organization focused on providing emotional support to help those at risk of suicide.

Our vision is a society where
People are able to explore their feelings without fear or prejudice
People are able to understand & respect the feelings of others and fewer people die by Suicide.

Our Services

There are 10 Sri Lanka Sumithrayo centers spread out around the country, The Rural programme and The Outreach unit supports the community in numerous ways face to face / Over the phone / mail

  • Providing Emotional support for people to develop coping skills and deal with everyday stress and strains of life
  • Befriending at institutions on request
  • Programs conducted for the farming community who live in economic difficulty. They are faced with changing weather patterns and crop failures which add to their economic difficulty
  • Giving support to Drug dependents and their families
  • Conducting awareness programs on prevention of suicide

At Sri Lanka Sumithrayo, our volunteers are available for befriending Via Telephone, Face to Face, Messaging or email at our centres. Opening and closing times at our centres vary from 9am to 4pm.

There are 10 Sri Lanka Sumithrayo centrs spread across the country. Our Rural Programme includes 2 centres in Panduwasnuwara & Lunugamverhera.
